WebSTATE OF PEPSU 1956 FACTS OF THE CASE. The appellant Basdev belonging to the village of Harigarh is a retired military Jamadar. He is charged with the murder of a young boy named Maghar Singh, aged about 15 or 16 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. People in living in the same village had gone to attend a wedding in another village. The Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) was a state of India, uniting eight princely states between 1948 and 1956. The capital and principal city was Patiala. The state covered an area of 26,208 km². Shimla, Kasauli, Kandaghat and Chail also became part of the PEPSU.
